There are seven beautiful islands that make up the Tuscan archipelago off the coast of Monte Argentario. They are, in order of size, Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Montecristo, Pianosa, Giannutri and Gorgona.

All of them are within relatively easy reach by boat from either the harbour of Porto Santo Stefano or Porto Ercole’s more modern and chic marina called the Cala Galera.

The Cala Galera, once a fascinating natural cove, is now filled with luxurious sailing and motorboats and has a pretty shop-lined parade. Already used by the Romans for their voyages to Sardinia, this port can harbour up to 700 boats and is an important and safe stopover point for private cruises to Sardinia, Corsica and the islands of the Tuscan archipelago.

Porto Ercole celebrates with grand festivities and great local participation the feast of the patron saint on June 2, which includes an evening procession with illuminated boats.
